Patient Information:

(Guide on Downtime and Skin Care During Treatment)

1. What is downtime?

Downtime is the period during which the skin may show visible changes after starting a depigmentation treatment.
With NewMelan, downtime is usually milder and shorter compared to other protocols such as intensive chemical peelings.

2. What changes may you notice?

During the first 7–14 days, it is common to observe:

  • Mild redness (similar to a “flushed face”).
  • A feeling of tightness or dryness.
  • Fine flaking (skin peeling in small scales).
  • In some patients, mild and temporary itching or burning.

These changes indicate that the product is working and that the skin is renewing itself.

3. What should NOT worry you?

  • Skin looking drier than usual.
  • The appearance of a “mask effect” with small scales or patches.
  • Skin looking slightly duller in the second week before improvement begins (skin purging phenomenon).

4. What warning signs should you watch for?

Although rare, contact your doctor immediately if you experience:

  • Very intense redness (bright red skin).
  • Strong and persistent burning.
  • Blisters, crusts, or wounds.
  • New or darker hyperpigmented spots.

In these cases, the dermatologist will adjust the treatment.

5. How to care for your skin during downtime?

  • Use SPF 50+ sunscreen every day, reapplying every 3–4 hours when exposed to sunlight.
  • Avoid rubbing the skin, using exfoliants, rough towels, or irritating products (such as unsupervised retinoids).
  • Do not self-medicate or stop treatment without consulting your doctor.

6. How long does downtime last?

In most patients: 1 to 2 weeks.

After that, the skin gradually returns to normal, and visible brightening results usually begin to appear from the second week onward.

Final Message

Downtime with NewMelan is expected, temporary, and generally mild.
With proper care and medical follow-up, it is part of the process to achieve smoother, more even-toned, and radiant skin.
